Ancient grains are a biodiversity heritage that benefits the health of people and the planet. Discover Bio Miceli’s commitment to preserving it.
In Buseto Palizzolo, a small town on the hills between Erice and Segesta, in the province of Trapani, the Bio Miceli farm is dedicated with passion and respect to the cultivation of organic ancient grains.
Rosaria Miceli, the company’s founder, carries on a tradition that keeps the family’s agricultural heritage alive and connects the past with the future.
With the awareness of wanting to practice environmentally respectful farming, the company has chosen a path of strict organic agriculture that does not compromise the health of natural resources such as soil and groundwater, essential elements for a healthy and fertile ecosystem. This has been Rosaria Miceli’s commitment since 2001, confirmed by the organic certification obtained in 2013: no to glyphosate, pesticides, GMOs, synthetic fertilizers, and herbicides; instead, there is crop rotation and the use of green manure such as vetch and fava beans for nitrogen fixation and better soil fertility.
To protect biodiversity and safeguard the local agro-natural heritage, the company has embraced the cultivation of Sicilian ancient grains like the durum wheat Perciasacchi, named for the pointed shape of the grain that used to pierce (“perciava,” in Sicilian) the jute sacks in which it was transported, giving up genetically modified modern hybrids.
