A common goal: zero-emission oil

Greenhouse gas emissions, which have caused the phenomenon of global warming, are responsible for extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, desertification, heatwaves, and cold spells.

Although agriculture continues to play an irreplaceable role in mitigation, providing a strategic contribution to the absorption of CO₂ from the atmosphere throughout the entire life cycle, agricultural products can also have an impact on climate warming.

For example, an industry study showed that "the life cycle analysis of extra virgin olive oils highlighted that the most impactful phases of the supply chain (50-65%) are those related to olive cultivation, 20-25% to the production of packaging materials, 16% to the distribution of the finished product by truck, 5% to the packaging of the finished product (due to electricity consumption), and 3-5% to oil extraction (also due to electricity consumption)."

Boniviri has committed to eliminating the greenhouse gas impact of its extra virgin olive oil. How?

  • During the second half of 2020, Boniviri initiated a data collection process related to its production supply chain, involving one of its partner farms and an olive mill in completing a detailed questionnaire.
  • Once the data is obtained and processed, during the first half of 2021, Boniviri will be able to understand how many emissions the production of one bottle of oil generates on average.
  • Subsequently, thanks to these calculations, Boniviri will be able to offset the emissions generated through reforestation projects in Italy: planting a tree means capturing CO₂ from the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, Boniviri has committed to making responsible and careful choices regarding its supply chain and packaging.

For example, Boniviri’s bottles, made with a high percentage of recycled glass, are produced in Marsala, Sicily, not far from its headquarters and the project’s partner olive mills. This helps reduce the carbon footprint impact related to transporting bottles, which are often purchased from glassworks in northern Italy or Europe, shipped to Sicily, then used and sent back to the final customer.

Boniviri’s choices, just like yours, can make a difference in achieving our common goal: zero-emission oil.
