A common goal: zero-emission oil

Greenhouse gas emissions, which have generated the phenomenon of global warming, are the cause of extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, desertification, heat waves and cold.

Although agriculture continues to play an irreplaceable mitigation role, providing a strategic contribution to the absorption of CO₂ from the atmosphere, throughout the entire life cycle, agricultural products can also cause an impact on climate warming.

For example, an industry study has shown how "the analysis of the life cycle of extra virgin olive oils has highlighted that the most impactful phases of the supply chain (for 50-65%) are those related to the cultivation of the olives, for 20-25% to the production of packaging materials, for 16% to the distribution of the finished product by truck, for 5% to the packaging of the finished product (due to electricity consumption), for 3-5% to the extraction of the oil (again due to electricity consumption)".

Boniviri has committed to eliminating the greenhouse gas impact of its extra virgin olive oil. How?

  • During the second half of 2020, Boniviri activated a data collection process relating to its production chain, involving one of the partner agricultural companies and an oil mill in completing a detailed questionnaire.
  • Once the data is obtained and processed, during the first half of 2021, Boniviri will be able to understand how many emissions the production of a bottle of oil has generated on average.
  • Subsequently, thanks to these calculations, Boniviri will be able to offset the emissions generated through reforestation projects in Italy: planting a tree means capturing CO₂ from the atmosphere.

In the meantime, Boniviri has committed to making responsible and careful choices regarding its supply chain and packaging.

For example, Boniviri bottles, with a high percentage of recycled glass, are produced in Marsala, Sicily, not far from its headquarters and the project's partner mills. This allows to reduce the carbon footprint impact related to the transport of bottles that are often purchased from glass factories in northern Italy or Europe, sent to Sicily, to then be used and sent back to the end customer.

Boniviri's choices, just like yours, can make the difference in achieving our common goal: zero-emission oil.
