It is called “gods food” by lovers, thanks to high nutritional value. It’s a food source for astronauts because of its simple use. And at Venice, in Biennale Architettura 2021, this high-protein and innumerable benefits algae was showed also as a fantastic supporter to fight CO2 emissions, at home.
What is Spirulina Algae?
It’s the most curious product in Boniviri’s catalogue, of course, all is to try and discover. Spirulina algae originally was grewn at Lago Texcoco by Aztecs, where it was eaten also by pregnant women. Today, it’s being cultivated in fresh-water tanks in Europe and in Italy, also Spirulina by Boniviri, whom is produced in Ragusa.
Energy and protein source, rich in iron and natural pigments such as phycocyanin, beta-carotene and chlorophyll. It is one of the most appreciated super-food, a very important food treasure that the world could give us.
It has countless beneficial effects for health: it strengthens the immune system and counteracts fatigue, it has energizing, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and detoxifying properties. Helps regulate blood sugar, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
And in kitchen?
Sweet or salt? There are so many recipes that you can test with the “gods food” in powder. It will make them tasty and healthy.
You can add spirulina powder in your smoothies, drinks, juices, milk or yogurt for a rich breakfast or a powerful snack. An energizing spirulina milk for example is ideal to start the day in a fantastic way or before an intensive workout. It could be done warming vegetal milk, not boiling, add a spoon of spirulina algae and also a spoon of Boniviri honey. To try also in cookies and pasta.
Curiosity - Spirulina - How will we live together?
Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto of ecoLogicStudio (London, UK) exhibited in the Arsenale pavillions at Biennale of Venice 2021 BIT.BIO.BOT, a very interesting project in 1:1 scale, an immersive experiment for domestic farming of the urban microbes, in particular spirulina.
Beyond the countless food benefits that we wrote some sentences ago, thanks to the great job of the ELS team of London it was demonstrated how spirulina algae is also an important supporter to fight the environmental pollution, and with high makings to produce it at home by ourselves, doing an elevated garden made by water, ampouls and algae spirulina.
It is a result of 10 years old searching about bio-digital design, that combines computational design (BIT) strategies with proprietary manufacturing techniques (BOT) to implement a collective microbiological cultivation (BIO) protocol.
BIT.BIO.BOT is composed by three systems connected by themselves. They become architectural landscapes of a future house: the Living Cladding, Vertical Garden and Convivium. At the base of BIT.BIO.BOT is photosynthesis, powered by the sun and by the metabolism of Spirulina Platensis and Chlorella SP crops. These living organisms, among the oldest on Earth, have developed a unique biological intelligence that allows them to convert solar radiation into oxygen and biomass with unparalleled efficiency.
An example: while active in production, the Vertical Garden is capable of absorbing CO2 at the rate of three large mature trees, providing a clear path to carbon dioxide neutrality in architecture.
